Preforms Made By the Overbraiding Technique

Overbraiding is a technique used to produce net-shape, cost-effective structural preforms. In overbraiding, fibers are braided directly onto a core, which defines the internal geometry of the desired shape. By reciprocating the core through the braiding point, multiple layers can be applied to achieve the desired wall thickness or areal weight. The lightweight core may either remain inside the final product or be removed using a lost-core technique to create a hollow structure.

  • Reproducible results thanks to CNC control and automated processes
  • Timesaving compared to manual preform construction
  • Braiding angles are programmable between 15° and 80°
  • 0° (UD) yarns can be integrated to form a triaxial braid, ideal for handling bending and torsion
  • The ratio between bias and UD yarns can range from 100/0 to 15/85
  • Hybrid configurations possible in both bias and UD directions
  • Excellent energy absorption in crash structures—braided designs function as natural crack stoppers
  • Good resin permeability for efficient infusion
  • Eccentric geometries possible, including banana-shaped preforms
  • Preforms can be used with RTM processes to achieve fiber volume fractions up to 55%
